98s GAA Club – 50th Anniversary

The 98s evolved from the Bohermore Club. It was named after the 1798 Rebellion; later Tonery’s pub became known as the ‘98’s Bar’. One notable County Junior Cup final against Woodford, played in Gort, ended in a running battle through the streets after the match. The clubhouse was situated in Bohermore. The site was later occupied by ‘Monto’s’ shop; today it’s covered by townhouses. One of the last achievements for the 98s was in 1968 when they won the Under-16 Galway City Hurling and Football Leagues. The 50th Anniversary Celebrations were held in Tonery’s Pub (2018). Part of the celebration was Galway’s history-making champions in 2017, winning: Liam McCarthy All-Ireland Hurling Cup – Leinster Cup (Bob O’Keeffe) – National Hurling League Cup – Walsh Cup – All-Ireland Poc Fada Cup (Tadhg Haran) – Liam Mellows County Hurling Champions.
