On Sunday 26 August 1973, the Traveller’s Rest pub soccer team won the Bass Ale Trophy after defeating Billy Walshe\u2019s Pub. The match was played on the Jesuit Pitch, Sea Road, before a large crowd. It was a thrilling final, with Walshe\u2019s going into attack from the sound of the whistle. They put the Travellers under immediate pressure. They almost went ahead after ten minutes when Dominick Curran ran onto a great through ball, only his effort was foiled by Padraic Killeen in the Travellers goalmouth. He dived at the feet of Curran and forced the ball out of play. There were calls for a penalty from Walshe\u2019s team members and their supporters, but the referee thought otherwise. Play swung in favour of the Travellers after this episode, with their halfback line of Martin \u2018ODowd, John Keady and Frank Feeney taking control of the middle of the pitch. The best effort came from a long shot by John Keady (Travellers), but it went just wide of goals. The second half started with Walshe\u2019s again attacking and piling on the pressure. Dominick Curran was again to the forefront of the attack, but his cross from the wing was headed away by Patsy Burke. The only goal in the game came when Frank Feeney pumped a long ball forward, headed on by Mick Casserley to the feet of Damian Bradley, who made no mistake and sent the ball into the corner of the net to clench the title for the Travellers. The referee was Paud Nolan. Note: there were two sets of brothers playing against each other that day.
