Michael Hickey was a warden in the old Galway Jail. He was born in the civilian quarters of Wexford Jail. He moved to Galway as a young man and lived in Corrib Terrace with his wife, Mary, and their six children. He was presented with the Edward VII Imperial Service Order Medal. This was an order established in 1902 for civil servants who had twenty-five years service. His son Con Hickey was the noted boat builder. All the children rowed very successfully with Galway Rowing Club. <\/em>When Galway Jail closed in 1939, members of the administration staff were invited to take a memento from the living quarters in the prison. Michael chose a very attractive wooden shelf. Both the shelf and medal are still in the family. (Incidentally, Edward VII and Queen Alexandra Galway in 1903).<\/p>\n\n\n
