Our Lady\u2019s Boys Club has been a constant source of guidance and inspiration to the youth of Galway since it was founded in 1941. There was a great need for social and recreational facilities at that time. Such activities were virtually non-existent in Bohermore, Shantalla, Claddagh, and \u2018The West\u2019. The primary aim of the club in those days was to show the boys ways and means of securing their own destiny. The activities included soccer, rugby, Irish dancing, boxing, swimming, lifesaving, table tennis and rings. This was all provided for a nightly fee of one penny. The Rosary was recited, and tea with bread, butter and jam was served to the members. This was an important supplement to the diet for many of the boys. From its foundation, an annual club camp was organised. This was a week-long holiday for boys who might never have had a holiday. They were always well-fed and looked after by the adult club members. It was always an exciting time for everyone involved. They also helped find employment for the boys as they got older. The boys were always encouraged in sports and taking part in other activities. The club also gave its members a sense of loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n
